Show your true colours: NRL fans urged to get behind Jersey Day

Diehard rugby league usually don’t need any excuse to don their team’s colours – and this Friday, September 5, there is even more reason to show your support for .

Coming into its 11th year, schools and workplaces across the country are encouraged to celebrate Jersey Day, with fans of the game asked to show their support for organ and tissue donation as you pull on your favourite jersey.

A campaign all about raising awareness, Jersey Day helps highlight the work of The Organ and Tissue Authority and the network.

The inspiration for Jersey Day came from the story of Nathan Gremmo, who was tragically lost in an accident in May 2015.

Nathan – who was an avid Parramatta Eels fan and Hills District Bulls junior player – was 13 when he was critically injured while crossing the road near his home in Sydney's north west.

Nathan’s family chose to give the gift of life to others to honour his legacy and in the process, were instantly able to help save the lives of others.

Unlike many other issues that seek to fundraise for their cause, organ donation is something that can only be helped by raising awareness rather than funds, due to the critically low number of people registering as donors.

Since a person's intentions to donate organ and tissue stopped being included on driver licences, individuals have been required to register their wishes at

The NRL is encouraging schools and workplace to get behind the campaign and will also be encouraging its own staff to take part by wearing a jersey to work on September 5.

Supporting Jersey Day is a fun way to start an important conversation and to encourage people to register to become an organ and tissue donor and help to save a life.

To participate, pop on your favourite jersey, take a photo or video and post it to social media with #jerseydayau #donatelife and have a conversation with your loved ones about becoming an organ and tissue donor.
